Message From Gail

Attention Leaders:  THE NEW TIME FOR OUR GENERAL MEETING IS 2:00 PM.  This is a permanent change.  We made this change because we want to make sure that leaders are receiving all pertinent information and not being rushed through either the general meeting or the age-level roundtables.  We are under the constraint of having to be out of the facility before 4:00 PM due to another group using the facility after us.  Therefore, our District Team decision is to move the meeting time to 2:00 PM for returning leaders. This means that the New Leader meeting will begin at 1:30 PMThank you for you cooperation and understanding.

On to other topics--Congratulations to Jessie B, Gini C, Megan H, Lauren H, Claire M, Hallam O and Emily S.  Each of these girls was selected to attend a Girl Scout "Destination" this summer.  Some of the places they will be visiting include Alaska, California and Michigan.  These young ladies will be busy raising money for their trips and with ALL OF OUR SUPPORT they will accomplish their goals.  Watch for future emails about how we will be able to help these girls.  (Remember, your daughter may be a future "Destinations" girl.)

A couple of items that may be of interest to you:  A new Lakeshore Learning Store has opened in Matthews.  They offer free crafts for kids on Saturdays.  Call them for info 704-849-2370.  (If you are looking for a "teacher" gift, a certificate from this store would be much appreciated).

The Sports Connection opened last month in the Ballantyne area.  It is a family entertainment center where kids can bowl, play laser tag and arcade games, and jump on inflatables.  It's on Ardrey Kell Road near US 521.  No admission fee--pay what you use.  Check out www.sportsconnectionnc.com

Once again, remember, our District meeting begins at 2:00 PM on Sunday.

Hope to see you Sunday (and at the PJ party the night before).

Congratulations Union1 District!! by Fanny, Membership Specialist

You are officially the biggest district in the Hornets' Nest Council with 108 troops and serving 1027 girls within your district limits.  Thank you for allowing girls the experience of being part of Girl Scouts!

Volunteer Policies by Fanny, Membership Specialist

Thank you to all new leaders, co-leaders, assistant leaders, cookie managers and treasurers for submitting the appropriate paperwork in a timely manner.  As you may know Council pays for all, if not the majority, of criminal background checks done on volunteers in leadership roles or in positions where money is handled.  The volunteer application is ONLY required for such positions in a troop.  Leaders, let’s use our resources wisely by submitting these two very important pieces of paperwork ONLY for the positions that required it such as the ones mentioned before.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Membership Specialist: Fanny.

Troop 106 – by Tami, Leader, Troop #106

Troop 106 has been very busy. Three of the five girls have already completed their silver awards, and the other two are working on their projects. Lauren, Lindsay and Morgan earned their silver working with their local schools and neighbors. They collected toys for the Battered Women’s Shelter, Supplies for the Humane Society and books for the Levine Children’s Hospital. They also sorted, wrapped, and distributed their good on Dec 21. Way to go girls!!

A Night of Beauty – by Stephanie, Leader, Troop #1048

The troop went to Pod 5 for an evening of beauty and healthy living.  We did facials, make-up, nails, hair-wrapping and several other activities to earn the Sign of the Star.  We ended the trip with a run through the fitness trail and creating of a daily body, face, teeth, hair care schedule.  Great fun by all, even the leaders got facials and make-up.  Have a photo or two if you want.

FYI:  Horse Fan Badge – by Cathy, Co-Leader, Junior Troop #177

Juniors Troops #177 and #3602 joined forces on January 8th to take advantage of the FYI Planner's Guide activity at Leg Up Equestrian Center in Ft. Mill, SC.  The girls learned about the proper care of horses, stable management, equipment for both horse and rider as well as the grooming of the horses.  After a demonstration of riding techniques, each girl donned a riding helmet and took a ride around the ring with one of the horses.  All of the girls completed the activities in order to earn their Horse Fan Badge.
