Message From Gail

Hello leaders and Happy Mother's Day!

I hope you all get whatever it is you are wishing for on this special day.  Be it time to yourself, a dinner out, a kiss & hug or something else that makes you happy.  Remember, we do not have our District meeting on Mother's Day.  We'll see you on May 18th instead.  I hope I do see many of you that day as it is my last official leadership of the District meeting as District manager.

Thank you to all of the leaders who have been sending me your Annual Troop Report (along with your most recent bank statement).  Please remember that these are due TO ME by May 31st.  I then send them on to Council.

Thanks also to all who supported our Carnival & Auction for the destinations girls.  It was a great success!  The girls will be at the District Meeting on May 18th to sell their "wares" once again.

Please remember to complete the leader survey.  A link to access the survey was sent to you on Monday.  It is very important that we get your input so that we can plan appropriately for the upcoming GS year.  The team puts a lot of time, thought and effort into planning activities and events and we need your ideas and suggestions (or concerns).

We are still seeking to fill 3 positions on the Team:  Family Campaign coordinator, Sponsorship Coordinator and Public Relations.  Sandy Brunt is one of our Public Relations coordinators and we are seeking another volunteer to help her with this job.  If you would like additional information about any of these positions or would like to volunteer for one of them, please email or call me.

One last item--Please join me at our Leader Banquet on May 31st.  A registration form will be emailed to you shortly.  This is a time to celebrate your accomplishments as a leader.  It's also a time to kick back and have some fun.  Spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend.  So...mark your calendars and plan on attending.

See you Sunday.

Gail

District Survey

The 2008 Union1 District Leader Survey is now available online.  Please take this survey and let us know what you think of the District and District Events.  The team will be getting together in June to plan NEXT YEAR's events.  This is your chance to tell us what you loved, what events and programs you'd like to see again next year, and what you wish we would change.  Speak up - now's your chance.  The survey closes on June 1st.  The link was sent via email.  Contact Donna if you did not receive it.  Every leader, co-leader, and assistant leader should complete the survey for themselves.  It is so easy.  It is completely anonymous.  And it only takes about 2 minutes.

Leader Banquet & Auction

The End of Year Leader Banquet and Daisy Dollar Auction will be held on Saturday, May 31st.  Cost is $10.00 per person.  The theme this year is “Red, White & Blue – It’s All About You.”  Come dressed in your favorite patriotic outfit and share some fellowship with other leaders.  All leaders, co-leaders, and assistant leaders are invited to attend, along with spouses.  The link for the event was in the emailed newsletter.  Contact Donna if you did not receive it.

Remember to bring items for the Daisy Dollar Auction to the May District Meeting.  Earn $2 Daisy Dollars for every item you donate.

May Service Project:  Cleaning Supplies for Habitat for Humanity

Supplies could include a bucket, broom, mop, paper towels, dusters, toilet bowl cleaner, wood cleaner, glass cleaner, floor cleaner, rags, etc. Buckets will be distributed to new homeowners in the Habitat for Humanity community. If you like, include a “Welcome to your New Home” card.

Early Bird Registration

Hello, Leaders!  It is that time of year again to register early and receive a FREE patch and EXTRA cash for our District!  We will receive $1.00 for every girl registered by May 31, 2008.   You can mail your registrations to Sharon C or drop them off at her house.  Our District holds an Early Bird dinner for all leaders and co-leaders who register their troops early.  Each troop is encouraged to register Early Bird.  Doing this will cut down on the new membership year paperwork in the fall.  If you didn’t pick up your Early Bird Packet at the March District Meeting, please pick it up at the May meeting.  A few reminders:

n      Please make sure each parent has signed the forms.

n      Make sure all categories are filled out on the form.

n      Make sure checks are payable to GSHNC.

n      Please make sure the leader's portion at the bottom right corner is filled out.

n      Troop numbers and adult positions are printed correctly.

n      If a girl or adult does not have a pre-printed form, you will need to use a blank registration form.  You can pick these up at the District Meetings, at Council, at my house or you can print them off our Union 1 website.

n      All registrations should have a Dues Summary attached.  My suggestion is to make copies of the Dues Summary for you to use throughout the year.

If you have any questions about Early Bird, please contact Sharon C.  Thank you.

District Bridging Ceremony

The District Bridging Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 1st at 3:00pm.  Information and registration form has already been sent out via email.

Open Union1 District Team Positions

There are 3 positions open on the Union1 District Team:  Family Campaign Coordinator, Sponsorship Coordinator, and Public Relations Co-Chair.  If you have an interest in any of these positions, please contact Gail for additional details. Our District remains as strong as our volunteer leadership. Consider "stepping up."

Carnival/Auction by Sharon C

On Saturday, May 3rd, the Destination Girls had another fundraiser for their trips.  This was a successful event!  The girls worked hard on setting up the facility.  They enjoyed running the Carnival Games outside for all the kids to play.  I heard from my Mom that she and a friend enjoyed playing Bingo!  The funnel cakes were a huge hit!  Thank you, Gail!  The auction went great.  It was fun to see all the items being bid on and people were really getting into that.  The girls had a blast showing the items for bid.  They had fun playing "Vanna"!! It was great to see the girls getting into this event.  I also want to thank Chris B for all her hard work and dedication to the Destination Girls.  I appreciate her commitment to Girls Scouts and her all the support she is giving the girls.  Chris has been over these fundraisers for the girls and I want her to know how much she is appreciated.  So, thank you, Chris, for your willingness and your heart!!!  We all love you!  Thanks to all the Girl Scout families who came out to support this fundraiser.

Three Troop Trip to Camp Occoneechee by Kim D, Leader, Troop #1279

Jr. Troop #1279, Jr. Troop #3724 and Cadette Troop #851 joined in an adventure to Camp Occoneechee for fun and adventure. Unfortunately, our outdoor activities were cancelled due to the rains but we we still had a grand time. The Older Girls shared their experience with the Jr.'s describing their process in achieving the Silver Award and their plans to attain the Gold Award. They also shared how to make no-sew quilts and together 5 lap quilts were completed to donate to residents at a retirement home.  We also made pendants from tumbled glass, decorated T-shirts, made bracelets, necklaces, lanyards and origami. We played games, made swaps, made pictures, sang Karaoke and had impromptu talent demonstrations. In all we made new friends, ate a lot and had a great time!  Pictures of the event have been uploaded to the “Photos” section of the website.  Check them out.

“Smiles for Soldiers” Bronze Award Project by Kim D, Leader, Troop #1279

Junior Troop #1279 is continuing work on their Bronze Award project "Smiles for Soldiers". On April 26 our Scouts conducted a card making session at the Regional Library, asking Library Patrons to stop by and make a card for the soldiers. A total of 33 cards were made and will be sent over to the US Troops in MI Company 66, based in Iraq. There are two more card making sessions scheduled for Saturday, May 10 and Saturday, May 31 from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. We are hoping to gather at least 70 cards so each soldier can receive one! Stop in and help us support our adopted Army unit!

CSI Event by Cathy K, Leader, Troop #177

On April 19th, the Juniors from Troop #177 joined Professor Buzz in the Pods at the Council Office to learn what Forensic Scientists look for when searching for clues and attempting to solve mysteries.   Activities such as testing the reaction of substances, analyzing lip/teeth prints, and creating/dusting for fingerprints went towards the Science Sleuth Badge.  Pictures of the event have been uploaded to the “Photos” section of the website.  Check them out.

Latta Plantation by Cathy K, Leader, Troop #177

On Saturday, April 19th seven Brownies from Troop #177 attended Discover Latta Day.  This was an FYI event designed for Girl Scouts to learn about life during the 19th Century.  The Brownies made corn husk dolls and herb bracelets, they dipped candles, churned butter, saw re-enactments, farm animals and dancing, and of course, they had a great time!
