Message From Gail
Hello Leaders! We hope you will be at our first regular District Meeting for the 2007/08 Girl Scout year.
If you've checked out the email I sent a few days ago or the Union1 website, www.union1girlscouts.com, you will note that Union1 has LOTS of events and activities planned for this year. (These are in addition to the Council events/activities that are in your FYI). Union1 girls and troops are also hosting several events/activities on their own for various age levels too. Two that come to mind are "Brownie Sing-Along" and "Cookies With Santa." The events and activities we plan do not happen without preparation and commitment from volunteers. Right now we are seeking volunteers to help with our Junior & Up Camporee taking place November 9-11th. We need adults who will volunteer to help in the kitchen, help the activity facilitators, etc. Brownie leaders are particularly encouraged to volunteer to help. Come for a weekend away from your own little Brownie and learn about camp while helping out.
A couple of
reminders: Delegate training is taking place at
Speaking of roundtables.....Would YOU like something in particular on the agenda at your roundtable? Email your Age-Level Consultant. Their names and e-mails can be found on the website.

Recruitment Dates
September 14th -
September 15th –
September 20th -
Lots of help is needed at all of our recruitments. At our District Meeting in September, we
will have a short recruitment meeting after the main meeting to go over our
NEWEST handouts and information you need to know to help out at recruitment.
Our recruitment team will be present and we want all volunteers to stay for
approx 10-15 minutes to get the information.
Please also note that recruitment does not end after our four
recruitment nights. We still need to place these new leaders and new girls, so
please let your recruitment team know of your openings and availabilities for
New Girls ASAP. Please contact Mary
Louise or Wendy with any questions.
For this community service project,
troops or individuals can collect supplies needed for a birthday party and put
them together into one big gift bag.
Items collected will benefit the children at Turning Point, the battered
women’s shelter of
District Website & E-mail Changes
The Union1
District Website has undergone a few changes over the summer. To start with, the home page, www.union1girlscouts.com, now
contains the latest news affecting the Union1 District. Added to the website are photos of District
events/troops, a section on Family Campaign that will be updated each month,
the Union1 Leader Guide (under Resources), and lots of forms you may need
(under Forms). Also, the Team Roster,
District Calendar, and District Service Project lists have been updated for the
2007-2008 year. If you have any
questions or suggestions for things you would like to see on our website,
please contact Donna.
Also, the
Yahoo Group Lists have been updated.
Three e-mails went out requesting Leaders/Co-Leader/Assistant Leaders to
respond to remain on the list. After the
September District Meeting, all those not having responded will be
removed. Also, all e-mail addresses have
been put into the appropriate age level category for your troop. This year, our Age Level Consultants will
utilize these lists to keep you apprised of events and news relevant to your
age group. If you have not already done
so, please e-mail Donna with your name, troop number, age levels (Daisy,
Brownies, Junior and/or Older Girl), and e-mail address.
It is now time for those troops who did not Early Bird to register your troop now. All registrations must be turned in no later than Sept. 30th. Membership expires on 9/30. If you register by then, you will not have any lapse in insurance. We will receive 75 cents for every girl we register by 9/30. This money will go to events for the girls. Here are a few reminders:
1) Please make sure each parent looks over the pre-printed registration forms. Please update all information.
2) Make sure there is a parent signature on each form before turning in the forms.
3) Please go over the forms and make sure each category is checked.
4) There is a new pre-printed Dues Summary Form this year. My suggestion is to make copies of this form. This will be handy throughout the year.
5) Checks are to be made to GSHNC.
6) If a girl or adult in your troop does not have a pre-printed registration form, please use the blank registration forms.
7) The registration forms and Dues Summary form are now available for you to print off on the Girl Scouts Hornets' Nest Council website. Look under Troop Forms.
All forms and
money are to be sent to Sharon, District Registrar. You can bring your forms to the District
Meetings and put in the drop box. Please email
Please come

September District Meeting to give you more information and to collect donations
for this exciting event. Contact Jessica for more information!

Thank You from a Destination Girl Scout – by
Angie, Troop #1278
Dear
My name is Angie and I went on a
Destination trip this summer. My trip
took place in
If you would like to find out more about
my trip, please invite me to your troop meetings, so I can tell you all about
seeing 7 states from one place and what happened at lover’s leap. I wasn’t even the best rider at camp, but I
did become a good enough rider to win one of the barrel races. That was so much fun.
This trip would not have been possible
without the help of everyone in our Union 1 District. I was able to fund my trip completely because
of everyone’s help. I want to thank
everyone once again for all your help and support for my trip. It was truly one of the greatest trips of my
lifetime.
I’m looking forward to sharing what I did
and how you can make this possible too.
Being in Girl Scouts really does help you to do things you might not
ever consider doing.
Thank you again for the wonderful support
of Union 1 leaders and Girl Scouts. They’re the best!!!

Great Trip for Older Girls – by
Darlene, Troop #1000
I have a wonderful trip that you can
do as a family or as older youth. Troop 1000 and Troop 1019 went rafting
at the Charlotte White Water Rafting Center. WOW was it ever fun. A
few of the participants in our group fell out, but not Gail and I. That is because we are "experienced"
rafters... NOT! The girls had so much
fun that they want to go back. After our wonderful adventure we took all
the girls to Applebee's for food and dessert. It was a beautiful day, the
water was clean, and the people working there are very knowledgeable.
This gets a Five ***** on my scale.
