Message From Gail

Hello Leaders (that means you co-leaders and assistant leaders too):  I hope you will join us this Sunday for our monthly District meeting. It's a great way to network and get to know other leaders as well as get lots of information from our District team.  Just some reminders:

n  If you are interested in having a particular topic discussed at your age-level roundtable, simply email your age-level consultant.  I believe that this month the Juniors will be hearing from one of our older girl leaders about her troop's trip to Savannah.  The email addresses for all team members are at our www.union1girlsouts.com website.

n  Me & My Gal Bingo registration closes on Friday, 10/12.

n  Our Junior & Up Camporee is FULL.  The committee has been working hard to make this a great event for the girls.    Everyone attending (that means all ADULTS as well as girls) this event will have a "kaper" (job) assigned to them.  We cannot run this event without everyone pitching in.  Your kaper may be as simple as picking up trash around your cabin and will not take much of your time.  Please be part of making this a great experience for all the girls (whatever age they are).

n  On the subject of camping, we have been fortunate in that several of our new troops that have recently formed are Junior troops.  However, since registration for the camporee was already closed before they could sign up, we are hoping to provide them with a camping experience too, perhaps a bit closer to home.  This would be a perfect Silver/Gold project for one of our troops/girls.  Interested?  Contact me.

Remember no troop trip applications are needed for the camporee as it is a district event.  Just send me your permission slips (at least 1 week in advance).

Thanks and see you Sunday!

Gail

Ray of Hope Festival Service Project – by Julie, Leader, Troop #3403

Junior Troop 3403 volunteered to host a booth at the seventh annual Ray of Hope Festival sponsored by Levine JCC and Levine Children’s Hospital. This festival is for children with severe chronic illnesses. Our booth was the cupcake walk. To prepare, the troop baked ten dozen cupcakes. We then arrived for setup and decoration of our booth. The event lasted from 1 – 4 pm at the Levine Jewish Community Center with clean up right after. The attendance was lower than previous years so the girls got to experience not only helping the children decorate their cupcakes with icing and candy, but also got to enjoy walking around and serving the other many volunteers helping out. They got to see the joy on the face of both children and adults alike! They want to go back next year and help with another booth

Listening to the Past – by Ansley & Kinnan, Brownie Troop #140

Miss Rose had a lot of friends in Girl Scouts and she talked about being a good citizen.  She used to play with model airplanes and had a lot of fun.  We walked through the old church and it had beautiful glass windows.  It was a small church that is now used for weddings.  We liked the soft seats and thought the church was lovely!  Then we toured the cemetery and saw all the names and ages of people who died.  We really enjoyed meeting Miss Rose and hearing her stories.

First Community Service Project – by Elizabeth & Julie, Troop #2539

Junior Girl Scout Troop 2539 put together some seasonal costume jewelry at their first meeting.  The Troop then distributed their pins to the residents of the Legacy Heights Assisted Living Facility in the Ballantyne area on October 18th.  They also recited "When Daddy Carves the Turkey" by Jack and sang some songs for the residents and shared some Girl Scout cookies.  A great time was had by all.  This is the first community service project for Troop 2539 and they are looking forward to doing more.
