District Meeting Recap

February 2008

Thank you to those leaders who were able to attend our District meeting today.  Here is a recap for those unable to attend (and reminders).

n       Items were dropped off for the family whose house burned.  Some items were rather large, so we had to leave them.  Whoever was picking them up, the church is open on Tuesday evening for Scouts to meet, so you can pick them up then.  Thanks.

n       Thank you to troop 3403 for our flag ceremony today.  3403 thanks everyone for their donations to the horse farm.

n       Girls from troop 263 spoke about their service project--they will be collecting books for a children's hospital.  Donations of new and gently used books can be brought to our March District meeting for this troop to pick up.

n       Union County Commissioner, Parker Mills, has requested Girl Scouts to conduct the flag ceremony at the opening of their meetings.  If your troop would like to participate, please get in touch with Mr. Mills directly.

n       Requests for coin drive patches were due to Shannon today.

n       If you wish to nominate someone for Outstanding Leader or Outstanding Volunteer snail mail or email the paperwork to Robin by March 1st.  These recognitions are awarded at our District Leader Banquet in May.

n       Robin also talked about "inspirational jars," a project that her troop did last year.  These are glass jars that contain inspirational words on slips of paper.  They are given to those who are diagnosed with breast cancer as a means to uplift their spirits during a difficult time.  If your troop is interested, contact Robin.

n       Destinations--As you know 9 of our girls are going on Destinations this summer.  This group has several events and activities planned in order to raise the money they need to travel.

o        The first is our Parents Night Out this Friday (2/15/08) from 6-11 PM.  Dinner, crafts, movie, games.  $10 for the first child, $5 for each additional.  Ages infant to 12 years old.  Lots of adult supervision too.

o        Next is our Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt on March 8th from 8-10 AM.  We are still firming up the location.  Cost is $5 per person reregistering, $6.00 at the door.  Ages 2 and under free.

o        After that we have the Auction & Dinner on May 3rd.  The girls are going out into the community to get donations from area businesses, but YOU can help with this in 3 ways:

§         Do you own a business, work for a business, etc. that you could get some item or service donated--let us know.

§         Your troop can put together a "theme" basket to be auctioned off--a beach theme (towels, suntan lotion, flip-flops, cooler), a carwash theme (all the wash, wax, mitts to make a car shine).  We are asking for these to be handed in at our April District meeting.

§         Buy a ticket to the auction/dinner and come out with your family for some fun.

o        At our March District meeting the girls will have items that they will be selling individually, such as chocolate lollipops, kite kits, greeting cards, pumpkin bread, etc.  (Bring checks/money next month).  They will also be selling T-shirts (Council is helping with this).

o        We have a long history of sending girls on destinations and of strongly supporting them.  Let's keep that tradition going!

n       Leader Retreat--weekend of April 18-20.  Leaders are invited for fun and fellowship.  We are still firming up some details.  A flyer will be sent out soon.

n       Family Campaign--remember our Skate night on March 4th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.  Shannon also reminded us that requests for patches for the coin drive were due to her today and if you still have money trickling in from the coin drive, please get it to her ASAP.

n       Fanny spoke about Camp Catawba being sold.  There will be a "goodbye" ceremony in early March.  Expect details through an email from Council on this.

Thank you leaders (and my team) for all you do!
